Charlotte Ruth Nelson Patterson Papers 1927-1928

The Charlotte Ruth Nelson Patterson papers consist of photographs of Patterson, news clippings regarding her graduation from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) and Meredith College, and letters written to her father, N.C. State Textile School Dean Thomas Nelson. After petitoning the faculty council in the fall of 1926, Charlotte Ruth Nelson became one of the first female graduates of North Carolina State College (1927). She also earned a degree from the all-female Meredith College the same year. By doing so, she became the first student in North Carolina to earn degrees from two colleges at the same time. She taught school for 35 years. Other female students receiving degrees in 1927 were Jane S. McKimmon and Mary E. Yarbrough.
